Tourists throw $1.5M a year into Trevi Fountain

The Trevi Fountain in Rome is good business. The 18th century landmark attracts scores of tourists each year who toss roughly $1.5 million in coins into it. It has become a tradition in part due to the 1950s Academy Award-winning film "Three Coins in the Fountain." One coin gets you a visit back to Rome in the future and two will get you a new romance and, eventually, a beautiful Roman wedding. NBC News reports that Rome's city workers donate the money to Caritas, a Catholic nonprofit that supports causes around the world related to health, disaster relief, poverty and migration.

Report: Great Barrier Reef is worth $42B

Deloitte Access Economics released a report putting a dollar value on the “priceless” Great Barrier Reef for the first time. It values the Great Barrier Reef at $42.4 billion (A$56 billion) based on its economic, social and brand value. It claims the reef is “too big to fail” as it contributed $4.9 billion to the Australian economy in 2015-16 and supported 64,000 jobs. The reef, which is the world’s largest living organism, generates $22 billion in tourism. - Lead report author John O’Mahony More than 2/3 of the Great Barrier Reef has been damaged by coral bleaching events in the past two years alone. Bleaching, in which coral loses its algae coating, is a precursor to coral death. The Australian government committed $1.5B in 2015 toward improving water quality and curbing pollution in an effort to curtail bleaching, but experts believe this isn’t enough. - Al Gore
